Goal Setting: The First Step to Achievement


The current year is about to end. It’s only a few days  and we welcome year 2011. At this turn, it is only fitting that you will lay out plans ahead. All of these plans must answer the most important questions in your life:


1. What are my dreams? 
2. What is it that I really want in life? 
3. How do I achieve them all? 

These questions all related to setting goals and achieving them. Goal setting is an important exercise for network marketing enterpreneurs; without goals, we would just drift along. Goal setting allows us to be proactive, instead of just being reactive. We've all had days where we just seem to leap from one crisis to another, but we know that it's not a preferred mode of operation!
However, goal setting isn't enough. Goal setting is just the first step to achievement. Imagine, for instance, that your goal is to lose weight. Knowing that goals need to be specific if you're going to have any chance of success, you decide that you will lose 15 pounds by a date set four months from now. Time passes. Four months later, you get on the scale. Are you surprised to discover that you haven't lost any weight?
Goals Need Action
You shouldn't be. While you started out well, by setting a specific goal to achieve, you didn't perform any action to help you achieve the goal. What's missing from this scenario is a goal setting strategy to help you accomplish the goal you have set. Without a goal setting strategy, or series of actions, that you are going to use to work towards the goal, whether or not you achieve the goal you have set is just a matter of blind chance. And blind chance is no way to run a successful business! To be successful, you need to make things happen, not just let things happen.
The Winning Goal Setting Formula
So when you're setting business goals in network marketing (or any other goals!), use a goal setting formula that incorporates a strategy or strategies for accomplishing the goal. For example, suppose that you want to increase sales. When you're setting this goal, don't just write, "I will increase sales." This goal is too general.
First, specify the goal. "I will increase my group size this month by 25 percent". Setting a specific goal builds in the criteria you will use to evaluate your success; in this case, at the end of the month, you'll either have increased group sales by 25 percent compared to the previous month, or you won't.
Every goal you set needs to follow this basic goal setting formula: "I will (specific goal) by (specific actions I will follow to accomplish the goal)." You may have several specific actions you will take to achieve your goal, rather than just one.
Goal + Action = Success
What happens when you go beyond the basic step of goal setting? Evaluating your success or failure is easy, because your goal is specific rather than general. And suddenly, instead of just having a goal that you may or may not achieve, depending on chance, you have a specific battle plan to follow to achieve the goal you've set. Instead of setting yourself up for failure, you've set yourself up for success.


Network marketing is one of the most fun and rewarding business in the world. But no matter how long we are participating in this business and how much we are successful, we are faced with the universal challenges of rejection.

Every one faces rejection in life, but what makes our form of rejection so very devastating is that comes from the very people whom we most love and respect: our spouse, our parents, our best friends and business associates.

I am convinced that rejection causes most people to fail in network marketing than any other factor, and they fail literally even before they begin because their approach is from the head, not from the heart.

But you can only change their attitude by changing your own. After you have elevated your own self esteem and confidence level, only then will you be able to help others elevate theirs e.g. altering their opinion, strengthening family support or interest and opening door to friends and associates.

If you feel that you are being rejected because of an attitude you project, then take some time to work on your own personal growth before attempting to build an organization. Read books, attend seminars, and listen to audiotapes to enhance your self-image. Surround yourself with positive people who constantly remind you of your worth as a person and contributions you are capable of making. Shake off any residue of negative self-esteem, any emotional baggage that you may be carrying around and take pride in yourself.

So remember persistence, coupled with absolute belief, can never be defeated.


“Becoming happy yourself is no great challenge; it is quite simple. But the essence of life lies in helping others becoming happy as well”

This is a quote from my mentor. This is absolutely true in all aspects of life and more so in the network marketing business opportunity. Make your down line in network marketing business happy and your life will also reflect the same happiness.

Let me try to elaborate this from my own business opportunity. I joined a network marketing business in 1996 without any investment or help from any one except from my family members. I was determined to change my life from an ordinary house wife, just looking after my kids and house hold chores, to some one with name and fame. But I was just from an ordinary middle class family and I knew that a job could not help in what I wanted to be; nor was I so rich to invest in a business uncertain of its returns.

Then one day I read an article about a network marketing company which assured good income with negligible investment and the ability to fulfill my dreams. I enrolled but in a short while felt that this was not meant for me. “I can’t go door to door selling the products in the locality where I live” I would say. There was no one to guide me but seeing the opportunity which the company provided in imparting training of developing the business, I took it up seriously and learnt the steps one by one. And can you imagine how happy I was when I received my first commission cheque of Rs95, 15 years ago and I have not looked back after that.

In this business of network marketing I learnt to create my teams, develop my leaders from within the ranks and make them self independent, duplicating the same process of recruiting, training and helping their own teams to grow on their own.

Can you imagine how happy I am to see my group bubbling with joy in their growth, fulfilling their own dreams and earning good commissions every month. Looking through my financial reports, I am proud to see that my group is earning over Rs2 crores every year in addition to other cash awards on attaining higher levels of growth in addition to enjoying foreign trips all paid by the company.

Though I have a good no of men in my group and an equal no of women, I am extremely proud of making women entrepreneurs and contributing, in my own small way, in upliftment of the society around me and in empowering women who were just like me.

As for myself, I am extremely happy in my financial conditions, fulfilled so many of my dreams and certainly see a better future in bringing many more of our young generation to live a life of fulfillment through this business of network marketing.



Who does not want an extra income? If one says one is not interested that person is probably lying because money is an integral part of every one's life.

And, this is what I try to create in all my group members, the desire to achieve financial freedom as I know that is possible in the network marketing business.

I have a group leader in upper Assam who joined my network marketing group in the year 1999 in his wife’s name. This leader was, at that time, working as a sales representative earning a salary of just Rs3000; yet he had the desire to grow. He gave his wife’s name thinking that she would do something instead of being just a house wife.

For some initial years they just managed to keep their line alive as, being in a small town in upper Assam, they did not know how to develop a team. His wife was a total introvert without any exposure to either the networking business or interacting with unknown people. I traveled all the way to her home town to her train her and guide her in public speaking, but she refused. She sat in the corner and refused to meet me while I was staying in her own house. Yet I insisted that she speak before her members the next day.

That was the turning point in her business. She developed confidence in public speaking, became an extrovert and grew in her business at a good pace. So much so, her husband left his job and joined her in the network marketing business.

In just these 11 years they are now earning over Rs12 lacs per annum and have transformed their lives completely. From a rickety scooter they now own a Suzuki SX4 diesel car. As some one who had never stepped out of their own state, they both now travel twice a year on international conferences - all paid by the company.

This is what network marketing business can do - transform your life, fulfill your dreams. It allows you to see the world, that, too, free of cost in unimagined lavish luxury.

Network marketing is not easy. I will not lie. But, there is a known way to ensure your success. Though this secret is seldom used, yet for those that do, it holds true to the principle that I am about to explain to you - and it’s simple and cannot fail. That's right, your success is 100% guaranteed.

Before you start any Network Marketing business you have to do a little bit more homework than just looking at the compensation plan and the testimonials. You have to really research what you are about to get yourself into.

What type of research do you have to do? What questions should you ask?

Here they are:

How long has the company been around?

What is the product?

Is the product unique?

Does the product have mass appeal?

Is the product a front runner in an emerging market?

Can you become passionate about the product?

Does the business have a powerful marketing system in place?

Who are the successful people in this business?

What are the successful people doing to create that success?

Is the product something that the majority of the public can afford?

Am I personally financial stable enough to start a new business?

What type of a monthly marketing budget will I have to set aside to be successful?

What are the conversion statistics for the marketing process?

Is the business truly duplicable?

What would be my break even point?

Is there a way to make money quickly with this business or is there a way that I can create a quick income in marketing this business?

You see it's not just the opportunity that has to be correct. You TOO have to be correct for the opportunity and you have to be in a financial position to take advantage of the opportunity at hand.

Too many people, I see, jumping into a home based business on a hope and a dream.

They have barely enough money to pay for there monthly membership commitment and yet they still want to know the fastest way to grow their business for FREE.

When people get caught up in the emotion of opening the possibility for more in their life sometimes they don't think clearly. They think if they can just get themselves in they will get rich.
It's not just about getting yourself in.

It's about getting yourself in and putting yourself in a position to be able to fully maximize the opportunity at hand.

I get asked the following WRONG question all the time.

"How long until I make money?"

It's not about how long until you make money it's about what you have to do to make money.

The truth is you could put yourself in a profitable situation tomorrow or today, but it would take resources and a good deal of learning to know how to do it.

The truth is, the fast way is never the FREE way. It's either going to take you a good deal of money to put yourself in a profitable position or a good deal of education and leverage, and most of the time both.

There is no luck factor.

You don't earn money until you are worth of the income you produce. As the great Earl Nightingale always says "You have to be worth more than you are getting paid for your income to grow."

This is the natural state of all things and it's not going to change. In order for your income to grow you must grow.

Now . . .

Let me back up for a second to say that you CAN create a large amount of success in Network Marketing for free, but not until you know how.

If you don't have the answer to this question of how to create a large amount of success for free now and it is a burning desire for you learn how to do this, then get out there and do the necessary leg work and research to get yourself into to the position in which you can grow your network marketing organization for FR'EE.

Now let's talk about the secret that will absolutely guarantee that you succeed in Network Marketing.

I’ll give an example of the typical mindset for people entering into network marketing?

They say:

"Man ... IF I max out this plan I'll be making Rs40,000 a month and I'll never have to work again! Let's give it try!"

All we have to do is change one word in this statement to give you the little know secret to guaranteeing you network marketing success.

Change the word "IF" to "WHEN"

Don't make it a possibility to succeed in network marketing make it a conviction.

It's the people that see the compensation plan and do all the research that I've noted above and then say to themselves that it's only a matter of time until they max out their compensation plan that truly and always without a shadow of a doubt succeed.

Network marketing is not something that works part of the time or if your lucky. It always works as long as you do everything in your power to make it work.

Set a goal in your network marketing business and don't stop until you get there and you WILL get there.

I guarantee it.



Let me ask you a question:

 Why did you decide to get started in a network marketing business?

You don't have to say anything out loud but answer this question in your head right now to yourself.

I guarantee you answer is somewhere along these lines "Well, I started my business because I wanted to make some extra money and who knows maybe even become financially free."

Am I right?

Well let me ask you another question now.

When you prospect and talk to leads about your business what do you talk to them about?

Most likely you try to stick to the corporate script which inevitable ends up with your prospect asking you questions about your network marketing companies products or services.


And by the end of the conversation both you and your prospect end up confused, usually getting somewhere between details about your companies product or service and the compensation plan.

Likely story!

Here's why:

Successful Network Marketing has NOTHING to do with selling your your product at ALL!

To the contrary, the only thing that you should EVER talk to your prospect about is the same thing that got you sold on your companies business . . . More Money and Financial Freedom!

You see network marketing is built on financial hopes and dreams and, honestly, if you're looking for business builders to recruit into your organization, your prospects hopes and dreams of financial success are the only thing that you should speak to them about, so they can sell themselves on it.

As an illustration of this principle, think about the situation this way: if you had an equal amount of your company's product in one hand and money in the other which do you think your prospect would choose?

The top money earners know the answer to that question and that's how why make all the money!

Here's the other shift in perspective that you're going to have to make if you want to have ultimate success with your business and it's simply a logical continuation on the point just discussed.

What you think of as your company's product is NOT its real product at ALL!

Continuing on from my last point, remember your network marketing business will not grow if you just push product; it will only grow if you sell people on their financial dreams.

The company's real products are it's sales, training and marketing system. With a good company's marketing system you will be able to generate sales the better way and reap the financial benefits of your business even faster.

In addition, with a simpler and more effective marketing system plus the strong the training your company provides the easier your system will duplicate.

If you want to think of it in its most simple form, your company's real product is its duplicability.

If you find a system that is easy to duplicate and you can have your prospect "sell themselves" on their financial dreams you will have a highly successful network marketing business.

Your Job is Simple:

Find people that want to attain financial freedom your way and then shorten their learning curve so that they can go out and do the same.







Last year I and my wife, Vanita, had the privilege of attending an international conference at Dubai where we stayed at, probably the biggest hotel in the world, Atlantis The Palm. In addition to luxurious rooms, it had a marine water park, dolphin bay, aquariums, lost chambers, under the hotel pools beaches and what not. And this was an absolutely FREE stay for 5 days including the air fare. That’s what I’d call the fruits and luxury of your hard work and dedication of your own business.

So if one is without a job don’t fret. There are many other avenues to explore and pursue.

A job with a constant and an assured monthly income is great… and that’s what everyone believes in… everyone wanting to ‘live a risk free life’. But just like every coin has a double side, having a job too has it’s double sides. The realization that an income might be assured yet the economic meltdown proved that there is no surety of job… there is always that desire for a fixed income but our needs, our wants and our aspirations are variable… in fact troubled times never come forewarned and even though one might have a saving, the need for more money does arise at such times

When I didn’t have my job, yes, I did feel all down and sad but then I realized it was a blessing in disguise… that I could start up my own thing. I remember the time when I needed a lot of courage because starts are never easy… there are lots of apprehensions and nervousness that come as a package deal - like the thought of return on investment, am I doing the right thing, where and how will I arrange the finances, will I be able to make my ends meet also or not, let alone make the profits I dream of making… Yes, I too went through that paradox and that dilemma and had few sleepless nights, tossing and turning just trying to figure out the best possible option… And then I realized one fine morning, I could not spend my life in this paradoxical state never being sure which course would be a 100 percent right course. Having treaded one path and being unsatisfied, I could definitely try the other one and attempt to succeed. And that’s what I did even though I was subsequently had a job, I still pursued my new goal.


a) Don’t have a job?

It’s great to get a job and earn monthly cheque but how many of us are lucky enough to find something that we really love? We join at a new workplace to invariably find out after some time (weeks/months) this is not what we wanted or expected. We pull on till the wire snaps as there’s no other option.

A job is a job and we are dependent on so many factors. It gives us security but takes out the fun from our lives.  while working in a company as an employee and so we will be without a job sooner or later. And what if we are broke, we are multiplying  the misery we have to go through

Lets look at it this way. I too don’t have a job. Thank God! I do what I want to do and I’m doing it damn well

So don’t worry and follow me in what I’m going to tell you all about myself

b) Not earning enough money?
Are you earning enough money through your job? With the steep rise in cost of living every day, most of us are unable to make the ends meet. We might get a raise or change our job for better remuneration, but its always back to dead end. Essential commodities have become costlier, fuel prices have been revised upwards for the 3rd time in 6 months children’s school fees, books, uniforms and the like have been more demanding. The outcome? The bank balance is slowly degenerating…

While you’re young and want to enjoy life, scarcity of money can make things difficult.
Think ! Think what’s the way out? Probably I have the solution

Getting bored at home?
Being a house wife or having taken early retirement and enjoying all the luxuries of a comfortable life at home. So now you have the time and resources to enjoy all that you have. While its certainly nice to know that there are people in this world who are contented with what they have, most don’t like to sit idle.

Let’s just think again; you are sitting comfortably on a rocking chair at home reading the day’s newspaper and your eyes fall on an advertisement offering a great discount on travel package to Europe, a destination you have always longed to go to. You put your newspaper down keeping it on your lap and gaze at a distant object with your mind traveling far, far in the western hemisphere dreaming about you and your spouse at that beautiful destination.

Suddenly the empty cup of tea drops from your hand and you get up with a start and grumbling for having day dreamed for something which has been a distant dream.

Probably you need a break and believe me you could get it absolutely free – why only to Europe but to all other beautiful exotic destinations in the entire world!


Do not want to invest much in your business?
Yes I will. But the next question is how much. We are always skeptical as to how much to invest and how much I have take a risk.

The is always an article in the papers about some one luring one to invest in the best possible business with out any risk and they got caught afterwards on complaints of swindling crores from gullible citizens.

You have to be very careful of where you are investing your hard earned money and the BIG question is “WHERE?”

I may or may not have all the answers right now but let’s wait and watch if there is a solution without any risk and minimum investment.

“Failure exists only in one’s imagination”

Few months back I read a wonderful article by Mr Kishore Biyani, CEO of the 5000 Crore Future Group. It was, published in the TOI daily and impressed me so much that I have, till today, kept a cutting and would love to share it with readers on my blog.


It says:
“Darr ke aagey jeet hai”-  Conquer fear and you can conquer anything.

We fear failure because we fear criticism, ridicule and rejection. However the truth is that anyone who has been successful had failed at some stage of their life. From failure comes knowledge of what works and what does not; from failure comes knowledge that one begins a more determined attempt to achieve success.

As one grows up, there comes the realization that there is no standard measure of failure and success. It is a relative term. What one perceives as extraordinary success may be an ordinary accomplishment for another. What may be a failure today often turns out to be insignificant in the long run

It is a fact that in our society we ridicule failure. Rather than encourage people to take the road less traveled, we discourage them. There is encouragement to conform, to a set pattern rather than stand out in a crowd. That is why failing in an exam or a new venture is feared.

I don’t think setbacks, disappointments rejections and unsuccessful attempts can be called failures. They are steps to success. How one deals with a setback determines the success of the next step. A sudden setback can be seen as a brick wall. It can also be seen as a stepping stone. It’s the way one perceives it that determines whether an unsuccessful attempt turns into a failure. Absolute failure is about not trying to do a new thing; it’s about lack of conviction; it’s about giving up”

Mr Biyani, who ranked 20 in a class of 35 at school, is today regarded as the man who pioneered the retail revolution in India. He relates education not only to what is taught in classes, but strongly feels that learning about building relationships, business partnerships human behavior and social dynamics is just as important as classroom lessons to succeed in any field.

Why I am telling you about this great personality is because, when you are in your own business, you will see failures; but let this NOT deter you from striving even harder and looking at avenues by which you WILL succeed. Never give up is the slogan we must always carry with us. Who knows, one day you will be at the same level as Mr Biyani in your very own business from home.



What is network marketing?
Network marketing, which is also called Multi level marketing, (in short MLM) is a way of distributing and selling products and services through a chain of independent distributors rather than through traditional retail outlets.
This is a system of direct selling and relies on your network of independent distributors, to reach customers by word-of-mouth. It provides an alternative to conventional arrangements that involve wholesalers and retailers. Besides eliminating costs associated with middlemen, network marketing reduces advertising and promotion expenses. In this manner it passes the savings to the independent distributors and customers.


Why would you choose network marketing as a business?

At this particular time when traditional business offers so little security, network distribution is really great for free enterprise. It’s a system in which common people can invest a small amount and with sheer determination and tenancy rise to staggering levels of financial rewards and personal freedom

It is also a way by which you could build your confidence, widen your circle of friends and feel more productive. Network marketing is indeed the greatest opportunity !!!!

But I won’t keep you in the dark. In network marketing you persevere or you perish. From personal experience and from statistics available on network marketing companies over 80% of all new members quit in the 1st year which is in the most important of the learning curve.
Now I’m talking of 1 just year and no more. Imagine any person ready to invest in 1 year or 2 in studying the network marketing business. He would surely be earning more that a surgeon after his putting more than 7 years of medical studies and practice. And believe me its true.

There have been various analysis which shows that an estimated 95% of those who survive 10 years in network marketing become wealthy beyond their wildest dreams and expectations.


How Does Network Marketing Work?

Today there are millions of people around the world building this unseen industry called network marketing. The DSA reports that there are over 20 million people in the world involved in direct selling.

You may not see them but they are everywhere, some probably right in your own neighborhood. It is a business in which common people can invest a small sum of money and rise to staggering levels of financial reward and personal freedom.

In Network Marketing we help and assist others in building their business. Hence the name Network. We get paid for this because we are assisting, coaching and helping them to establish their business. Helping them to reach their goals for their financial future. So It’s only right that we also get paid for our time?

In Network Marketing, we have our initial start up costs anywhere from just a few hundred Rupees.
But one of the important things to remember is, you are in a real business, and you no longer have a boss holding you accountable. Your network marketing success or failure is dependent upon you and your actions alone.

Your primary task will be to gathering customers for your products or services. To help and assist others get started in their own business partnered with you. Just remember, you are looking at a business model that will take 3 to 5 years to produce the kind of results you’re looking for.

So don’t give up your day job just yet. It will require 5 to 20 hours of consistent time and effort each week to build a successful Network Marketing Business. It will require a marketing budget, most people do not even consider this. This is a real business this is your business, not a get rich quick overnight program, although it has been hyped by a great many naive marketers and web sites. Network marketing is based on word of mouth advertising which is the most effective form of advertising. Think about it as when you go out to watch a great movie, you will go around and tell people about it – that is by word of mouth advertising. One of the most often asked questions is, will I have to sell products and services? The answer is of course yes. But its not like having a salesman or woman come to the door and sell them products. So how are we as a network marketers different? We recommend products or services that we like and personally use. If we know it’s good and personally use it, recommending it to our friends and family is very easy.



When Do I Get Started In Network Marketing?

Whatever you are doing at the moment, be it a job, house wife, student or in any other profession, you have to first ponder what has prompted you to start your home based business and that too in network marketing. You have to be absolutely sure that you are making a right choice and not going to waiver out of it at the first pretext.You need to be convinced that you need this business opportunity – either short term or long term, part time or full time. There is no purpose in starting some business and giving up because you will only give a bad name to this opportunity which others would like to pursue. So having made up your mind that you DO want to take the business opportunity, you would now have to study the business opportunity and the market available.



OK. So you like what you see in Network Marketing so how do you get started?

First: We must become educated about this business.

Second: You must treat it as a business and you must approach it professionally

Third: You have to choose an ideal company keeping in mind that the company possesses at least all these points:
  1. It should have been in business for at least 2 years with a good foundation in network marketing experience having a good no of distributors. This is very important because most companies go bankrupt in the first 2 years
  2. The company should have consumable products reasonably priced   in a mid-range with some products being unique
  3. The company should have a low investment and generous return policy
  4. The company should be a global entity or plans of going global
  5. The company should be a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA)
The company must have a specific and rewarding success plan
